Character Backgrounds 3: Protagonist

Hey guys

Geo here again.

(as always)

Today's unfortunately the last day I get to talk about the characters :(.

(it was very very fun while it lasted, admittedly)

But the last character on our list is the one who actually is the catalyst for the whole opening, a young African-American man who leads a simple yet fulfilling life with dreams and aspirations, tragically taken away by someone else's selfishness.

He won't be as expanded on as everyone else, although he will be one of our main subjects, his death will be the major part that pulls him into the story, development on him was kind of weird for me, I didn't really know how to characterize him or develop him, so I looked back on one of the workshops that I did a couple weeks prior, if you remember those, i'm talking about "make them laugh, make them cry". So what I was thinking was I'd put the audience in a happy or neutral situations with him, then drop them down to the lowest low, so they have the highest possible emotional values when they think of him. His memorability will be the best factor, fortunately that won't be too hard.

He represents victims obviously, wrong place wrong time kind of deal, or use of excessive force, he is very peaceful and will hesitate to use weapons, leading a very mellow life.

I hope he works out too, our character changes might override this whole thing, and honestly that's kind of scary.

Character Backgrounds 2: Sister

Hey everyone!!!

Today I'll talk about our second character, (which is still technically undecided but, I might as well talk about her too) she's the protagonist's sister, and becomes the protagonist later in the opening.

She is a small African-American girl, who lives in a good home and leads a good life, very similar to our protagonist, but soon after he passes, she jumps on the opportunity to right the wrong that has been committed, she doesn't seek vengeance, she seeks justice, and to prevent this event from ever happening again, it's a big dream, but she can do it if she puts her mind to it.

After the loss of her brother she matured into a very solemn and serious woman, yet inside she still reminisces and wishes that she could just go back to the better days, while being stuck in a situation that calls for maturity, and legal actions and procedures, she's tired of arguing about it and just wants a good conclusion, but she won't give up until her ends meet.

To be completely honest, she doesn't really represent anything, she just is who she is, I think if she even vaguely represents anything at all, then she must represent the true justice, the rights that can come from wrong and the experiences and good that can come from loss, she would represent that loss isn't the end, yet only the beginning.

I hope she makes a good character, and i hope we end up keeping her too.

Character Backgrounds 1: Cop Guy

Hey everyone!!!

So nice to (sort of) see you guys again!! (thanks for coming back after last week's subpar little blog at then end, still sorry about it!)

Buuuuuut, besides all that, this week we'll be getting to a cool part in the project!!!!!!!!

(It's my favorite part too by the way)

THE CHARACTERS!!!!!!!

Man do I love making and developing characters, it's a whole awful lot of fun, so, I won'y keep you reading the intro any longer, today's amazing Geo blog will be about The Cop.

The Cop is a figure in the story who is supposed to represent power, justice and all that is lawful, but we're sort of twisting that a bit, (you know, with the whole brutality thing) but don't worry, he's still a good guy!

A older white man in his 40's or so would be an ideal person, but our resources maybe limited on that one, so he might end up being a young man, naive, yet bold. The policeman, (name undetermined) will be a man who has power on his end, but assumptions and poor decisions will take over, as he assaults our protagonist relentlessly, as for why he did it specifically it is not initially clear, whether it be he considered the protagonist a threat or something else, a look into his mind will be given in the actual film, although his distress and realization will also be portrayed in the opening.

The Policeman won't have a super prominent role in the film, but he has a semi-large one, considering he assaulted the protagonist.

TL;DR: The Policeman will be expanded upon slightly in the opening, but his conflict will be the main focus of it, he doesn't have a big part, only to elaborate on why he acted how he did and why.

Foley, Conceptual Sounds

Hey everyone!!!

Today will be a very very small blog as we don't have much in the way of sound yet, but that's what i'll be discussing with you today!

(honestly we don't have much of anything yet and that makes me sad)

For our sound, (since most of it needs to be Foley) we will create a lot of the beating noises from the police beating scene, by banging on wood, plastic objects, and other things, mostly a plastic cup, hitting it with a spoon or hitting it on a table makes good beating noises, pillows being hit also make good accurate noises, but I realized that most of our sound will most likely be diegetic, as I don't believe that we will have music playing in the back of our opening, although I believe music would add to our piece, I don't think they'd put music in our film opening.

Music can evoke many emotions in people and even affect your mood, so a heartfelt tune will be the key to really bring out emotion in our crowd, although, we might have to borrow that music because none of us really make any music.

That's about all I have for this blog, sorry for it being so short! I promise next week's blogs will be way better as i'll be talking about the characters in the actual opening, their backgrounds, personalities and goals we'd like to reach with them!

Thank you so much for reading!

Setting, Mise-en-Scene, other detail oriented things.

Hey everyone,

Today I'll be giving you some information on where our opening might be filmed, and why it will be filmed there, I know it seems very cut and dry, but that's because it is, today will be very simple but informational, suffice it to say, I'm very tired right now.

As you all (Should) know, our film opening is about police brutality and criminal injustices and why they happen, it's a very simple topic to follow in mind but, relatively hard to picture in some instances, with the storyboard, (or the rough draft of it anyway) coming in this Sunday for you guys to read about, I'll just talk about the settings and lighting and atmosphere, it'll still be easy to follow

First off, as far as I'm aware we'll have 3 scenes, a scene where our protagonist is in his home, very peaceful, lighthearted atmosphere, so bright, soft lights will do, with lots of colorful, whimsical things around to set the tone of a normal/happy home. Our second scene is the transition from him at his house to a police invasion, then everything takes a sharp turn, as you don't expect it to happen.

(although to be perfectly honest, you might and probably do)

So for that I was thinking, dimmed lights, and use the same set as last scene (obviously) but significantly ravaged and wrecked, (camera shots and angles to come later), then for our last scene (hopefully), it's our protagonist on the pavement with blue and red lights around him, while he is struggling on the ground.

Anyways, I hope that the storyboard helps us organize because in the past i'm very good at abandoning my original story and doing something completely different, so I hope that it pulls through to bring an immersive and authentic feeling.

Real Life Examples (Although in different ways)

Hey everyone!!!

It's me, back again (as always, every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at around 6 pm est.)

And today, I will be bringing you some more information from our inspiration!

(Also as a side note, I know a lot of information on our ACTUAL production hasn't been given out, but please be patient, it'll be out soon!! Hopefully around the week after next week.)

So, in light of the events of the Parkland school shooting, there was a march held in Washington DC, and many other locations around America to raise awareness to gun violence and how loose the rules are, and how they need to be tightened up.  Now you might be thinking, well that's school violence problems and it doesn't really apply here, but actually a lot of the cases of African-Americans being assaulted by police are weapon violence, they're also the most common to be attacked/ killed.

So, I'm not just saying this trying to latch it onto what we're making just because, we actually had one of our team members, Carlos, go to California and participate in one of these protests, besides the fact that he is very passionate about the people who lost their life, he thought it would be a good idea to cover it for himself, and for us, the experience and putting yourself in the mindset of thinking like someone who was abused.

It doesn't seem like much but really anything helps to give us more influence and ispiration

Workshops Part 3 (We're all going to die, what you need to know)

Hey guys!!!

Its your boy, back again with another workshop.

Today, its an interesting one, its about drones, and how to be safe while you operate them!

This can be useful for us because like taking areal shots and overheads, so to be safe while we operate them is very very important.

Our speaker was a man named Judd Slirka, he is currently a drone instructor and a teacher, he lectured us on the dangers of drones, while still taking some questions on the side, he talked about when its a little too windy out , not to use a drone, or when there's signals that might interrupt it, or when flying next to power lines, because then it may create a power outage.

Obtaining a drone license isn't very difficult but it is the legal way of flying one, yet many people don't actually have a license to do so.

All in all i think it was a good tip to get because we will be using a lot of high angled shots to show powerlessness and ascension and death, so knowing the legal ins and outs is very good, even for future references.

Workshops Part 2 (Make them laugh, Make them cry)

Hey everyone!!!

I'm back for another workshop edition of my blog, today on this amazing edition, another workshop by a man named Dave Davis.

Mr.Davis is a teacher at a Nashville university, he traveled around the country for many student competitions and had worked for news stations before teaching.

Anyways, he talked about how to develop a character and what kind of shots to use to really reach out to the audience and make them care about them, the  kind of music to use, shot composition, things like that. I thought we could use it in out opening because we want you to care about this guy who went through such a hard time in his struggle against the law.

He also taught me how to portray people in certain situations, how to ease them into a sad situation, naming it, "high point, low point" where you bring your audience into a really high happy point, then to later hit them with the sad part, to use supporting shots and sound bites.

He also taught how to use comedy in certain styles, using a video example from his students , he very quickly analyzed how to make a moment funny, whether it be pauses, delivery, silence, and how to not make your joke fall flat. Although we probably won't be using comedy in our film opening, (because I probably won't be allowed to, as its very strict what I get to voice my opinion on) I think its a good tactic of deception to put your viewer in a good state of mind then dropping them into sadness.

I think it'll help us to take multiple tips from this guy because he's definitely done many developmental stories before, where he builds up characters with carefully woven stories, and it will do us good to take a page from his book!

Workshops Part 1 (How to make an award winning student film)

Hey everyone!!

I'm back with a little more content to offer you while i'm away at Nashville,TN for Student Television Network!

Today I'm bringing you some information about a workshop that I went to, it was about making films and how to shoot and edit, so you can get the feel that you want for it.

The workshop was named "How to make an award winning student film", which is very appropriate for what we're doing!

It was a workshop by a man named Tom, its odd really, he never said his last name. Moreover, what he DID say was how to stay creative and reasonable during a film, and I'll tell you what he said, but first a little bit of info on Tom himself.

Tom is the executive producer of All American High School Film Festival, a website that holds many film festivals for students of all ages, and it also includes photography and photojournalism.

Back to what he said though, Tom said that to make a good film you must stay focused, but not close minded, he said to feel free to make changes, as long as they don't override your stories, which is honestly what i'd like to do with my film opening, because I feel like we change something every single day.

He also stated that shooting in real locations is very very useful to what you're trying to achieve, as it gives off a level of authenticity, instead of faking your location, although I think we we're heading to a slum to film anyway. Dress code was something very important that he talked about, "You want the people to look like they should be there, or else it doesn't make any sense", I remember him saying, which is important because it reminded me of the importance of mise-en-scene.

That was my first workshop, I'll bring you two more soon!!!

Delving into Inspiration!

Hey everyone, Geo here with another amazing post!

Today we talk about BIG factors in our opening!!!

(that's exciting if you weren't caught up)

In my group there are 3 members, me, and 2 others. (obviously)

Today, we were all supposed to meet up and watch movies so we could find inspiration for our own opening, I unfortunately, due to different situations and time constraints, was unable to make it.

(It's ok though, we're still friends!!)

Speaking of time constraints, I'd like to address a absence of mine that will be coming up in the next week.

Next week, I'll be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, to compete in a television production competition, so unfortunately, I will be absent from posting from Tuesday through Sunday of next week.

Don't worry though! Its not all bad, I have taken the time to write and schedule 3 more postings for next week, just because I care about you guys so much and I wouldn't want to leave you in the dark.

Anyways, I just felt that I owed it to you to know that next week I won't be here for my die-hard fans.

(I know you're out there, somewhere)

Back to the main topic though:

Inspiration

I know I talked about it in my first blog post, hopefully if you're reading this you've read that. if you haven't I recommend you start at the beginning, but anyways, long story short, I couldn't make it to the meet, so instead I'll talk about a movie that I think WOULD actually be good to delve into how they work and why and use it in our piece.

Here it is:

Lakeview Terrace, by Director Neil LaBute, in it , a couple moves to a new home and next to them, their neighbor is a police officer.

Its actually a very deceiving plot because usually you would think that safety would ensue by moving/ living next to an officer, but it quickly changes, as he is corrupt and abuses his power to torture them by outside influences, I think it would be good to think about this movie in our production because it can help us have the mindset that not everyone is above the law but they might think they are because they hold a very high law position.

I'll keep you guys posted on what I find than can help us be more invested in the story and characters, See you guys soon!!

Just do what I would do, and that's believe in you!

Fonts,Fonts, and more Fonts!

Hey Everyone!!

I missed you!

I won't waste any time today and jump right into the deets.

WE PICKED OUR FONT FOR THE OPENING!!! (sorta picked it anyway)

I'll show you how it looks, then I'll talk about it, since I figure that's the best way to go about it.
This is what it looks like before we digitized it, its pretty accurate on how it should look finalized though.
So as you might've been able to tell, we hand wrote our font, then we'll trace it onto a computer software to actually make it, its a little curvier than I would like, but it will be fixed in editing.

You might be thinking, "wow, handwritten huh? I wonder why they chose to do it that way", if you actually thought that:

You're really good at knowing what I'll say

But the reason we picked a handwritten font is because we wanted to give it a very human feel, so it would fit with the tone of the opening. The Sans Serif lines in the font are supposed to represent its straightforwardness, no jokes, no breaks, just a straight shot to what it is. Its also supposed to, as i said before, retain its innate humanness, I'm not sure how to put it but, when you see the font, you can visualize the actions happening, where someone exclaims don't move in a tense situation.

Anyway, that's all for today.

Sorry for it being so short by the way, fonts aren't very interesting to talk about.

Wario Time!

The Great Title Adventure

Hey there everyone!!

It's me, Geo, back again with another amazing update.

Today, I'm bringing you a very important revelation for our project...

OUR TITLE!!

Yup, the official title for our piece will be "Don't Shoot". Kind of grim I would think, but it fits our opening and its content quite well.

You see, we are going to try and show humanity and emotion within our opening, so a very distraught humanness was very considerably thought about within our picks for titles.

We had other entries too. I'll talk about our other finalist just so you have something extra to read this week.

The first runner-up was "Tuesday Blues", the reasons we were considering this title was because Tuesday, the second day of the week, has a very somber tone to it, as it draws connections to Greek mythology on its ties to a god of war ,Tiw. The other half of the name "Blues" is connected to a music Genre that is mostly somber and monotone, very deep reaching and used emotionally in songs, such as "Sing Sing Prison Blues"*, a song by Bessie Smith. In addition to its musical undertones, blue is also a color often tied to sadness and emotional distraught. It will signify the sadness that the policemen will bring to the table.

Even though our title is mostly bringing negative emotions when you think of it, i'm still excited as ever to do this, it'll be so much fun!

Scheduling? more like Smeduling

Hey guys!

It's your boy bringing you another little update on how this whole project will progress.

(Because if you're reading this and aren't interested in the project, you're probably making fun of me by reading these posts)

So anyway, in the progress of these seven or so weeks, we've arranged some of our ideas into this schedule, (Which is still kind of in a rough draft spot for right now, as we're still ironing most of it out) We have about 3 weeks done into it and we're discussing the 4th week throughout our filming times that we have decided upon.

Anyways, Here's what it looks like so far:
We still have a long way to go and we know that, but we're hoping to iron out a lot of these problems in week 2, while still tackling other problems at the same time!

We hope to get more stuff done,as this schedule is just an outline and when the real one is done we will obviously adjust it as we need to.

Anyways I'm very happy to keep updating you guys on this stuff, you don't know how hyped I actually am about it!

To be continued

Boring research for a fun project!

How's it going everybody?

(It's me again, if you couldn't tell)

I'm doing some research on our project, to be more specific though, I mean genre research.

We're doing a crime drama film, (So exciting!!!) mostly centered on police brutality on African Americans, movies like, "Straight outta compton" and "The Shawshank Redemption" really helped bring us inspiration by setting such a dark and moody scene, that also sets the mood for lots of underdog type characters, who are seen being successful in spite of the unfortunate situations that they are presented / placed in, these crime movies are usually very well received, critically and commercially, as seen by the imdb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic scores of "Straight outta compton" and it's large profits, we also took inspiration from the praised "The Sopranos" TV show", it was very highly praised for its portrayal of a made man juggling with his family issues and dealing with his second life in the mob. we decided to take it as inspirations because of its success and critical acclaim.

We're trying to find a good balance between police brutality to see why the police act like they do, and not to portray the police in a negative light, hopefully we find a good medium.

Root for us!

See you around Space Cowboy
